SINGAPORE - Afghan President Hamid Karzai says some madrasas, or Islamic religious schools, were training camps for merchants of death and had to be closed down immediately.

He also told the BBC in an interview broadcast o­n Wednesday that the Al Qaeda network of Osama bin Laden was created to counter the former Soviet Union and received widespread support until it began to target the West.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- -- The Iraqi Special Tribunal has brought its first charges against Saddam Hussein for alleged crimes during his reign, the tribunal announced Sunday.

The charges were announced by Judge Raed Juhi, chief investigative judge of the tribunal. They are connected with a 1982 series of detentions and executions after an assassination attempt against Saddam in Dujayl.

KABUL, Afghanistan- Suspected Taliban gunmen kidnapped and hanged a pro-government tribal leader in southern Afghanistan, an official said Saturday, describing the latest killing of an ally of President Hamid Karzai.

      Agha Jan was kidnapped Thursday with his two sons, brother and two nephews from his home in southern Zabul province, said local police chief Gul Habib Jan. Agha Jan's relatives were freed unharmed, but the tribal chief's body was found Friday.

      ``He was a strong supporter of President Hamid Karzai's government and he was against the Taliban movement,'' the police chief said.

More than 630 soldiers from the Virginia Army National Guard are scheduled to return to the United States today after nearly five months in Afghanistan.
They are to arrive first at Fort Bragg, N.C., in two transport aircraft, then remain for processing before returning to their armories, mainly in Northern Virginia, late next week.

It is the largest returning force of Virginia Guard members to come home this year, according to Lt. Col. Chester C. Carter III, a spokesman for the Virginia Guard.
